Pet Proofing Your Home For The Holidays – DFW Pet Sitting

Pet proofing your home is an important step during preparation for the upcoming holidays.

Baby-proofing a house has become a standard when a baby arrives however, pet proofing your home is no different.  We all know our babies’ personalities and habits, and we learn how to keep our pets safe and our stuff secured.

Holidays however may bring some changes to our routines, decor and eating habits.  DFW Pet Sitting would like to remind all our clients to slow down and pay attention while getting their homes ready for the holidays.

Please pay especially close attention to the following:

Lights and Electrical.  It is recommended that you keep your pets in a different room while setting up your Christmas lights.  Remember, pets love to chew.  Please observe carefully while they are checking out the new items in the house.  Some won’t show any interest, but some may, just like children.

Christmas Tree.  Some pets may show a lot of interest in the ornaments and tinsel.  Again, the key here is to observe the level of interest your pet has.  Hanging breakable ornaments out of their reach is our primary recommendation.  However, if your pets is determined to climb that tree, the chances are that they will continue trying.  In that case, we highly recommend behavior modification through training or removing the tree.  And don’t forget to sweet up pine needles if you have a live tree – they are harmful to the intestines if swallowed.

Holiday Poisons: Mistletoe, poinsettias, chocolate, potpourri oils, turkey and chicken bones.

Pets can play a great part in celebrating the upcoming holidays!  Keep them safe, and enjoy your time!!
